هو أن العرب تضرب المثل بالعصفور لأحلام السخفاء، قال حسان:
لاَ بَأْسَ بالقَوْمِ من طُوٍل ومن عِظَمٍ ... جِسْمُ البغالِ وَأحْلاَمُ الْعَصَافِيرِ

المثل العربي «أَخَفُّ حِلْمًا مِنْ عُصْفُورٍ» يُضرب لمن كان قليل الرزانة، سريع الطيش، خفيف العقل، وهو قريب في معناه من قول حسان بن ثابت:
