A humiliation I would not accept if I had a helper."

l-Mufaddal said: The origin of this saying is that Al-Harith ibn Abi Shamir Al-Ghassani asked Anas ibn Abi Al-Hujayr about something, and Anas told him. Al-Harith then slapped him, and Anas became angry and said, "A humiliation I would not accept if I had a helper." Then Al-Harith slapped him again, and Anas said, "If I had stopped the first time, the second would have stopped too." His two words became proverbs, and the meaning of the proverb ais: "This is a humiliation I would not accept if I had a helper."

This proverb is used to describe someone who endures humiliation or injustice out of necessity, not out of contentment, because they have no one to help or support them. A similar English equivalent is:

Necessity knows no law.”
eaning: Necessity forces a person to do what they don't want.
“I suffer it because I have no choice.”
Meaning: I endure it because I have no choice.
“If I had someone to stand by me, I would not endure this.”
Meaning: If I had someone to support me, I wouldn't accept this humiliation.
“A powerless man must swallow many insults.”
Meaning: A powerless person is forced to swallow many insults.
“Might makes right.”
eaning: Might makes right.
This is close in meaning, though not in wording.
However, the closest expression that captures the spirit of the Arabic proverb is:
“I endure this only because I have no one to help me.”
“I ndure this only because I have no one to support me.” The second part of the story (if you end the first, the second will end) is paralleled by the famous English proverb:
“Give him an inch and he'll take a mile.”
If you give him an inch, he'll take a mile.”
Meaning, remaining silent about the first transgression encourages its repetition and escalation.
