يضرب لمن وقع في خصلتين مكروهتين.

أي: سواء فعلت أم لم تفعل فأنت خاسر.
وأقرب مقابل للمثل العربي هو:

«عالق بين خيارين أحلاهما مرّ.»
ويليه في الدقة:
“Between the devil and the deep blue sea.”
«بين شرَّين لا مفر من أحدهما.»
