أحمى من مجير الظعن
هو ربيعة بن مكدم الكناني. ومن حديثه، فيما ذكر أبو عبيدة، أن نبيشة بن حبيب السلمي خرج غازياً فلقي ظعناً من كنانة بالكديد فأراد أن يحتويها، فمانعه ربيعة بن مكدم في فوارس، وكان غلاماً له ذؤابة، فشد عليه نبيشة فطعنه في عضده، فأتى ربيعة أمه وقال: شدي على العصب أم سيار، فقد رزئت فارساً كالدينار. فقالت أمه:
أنا بني ربيعة بن مـالـك
نرزأ في خيارنا كـذلـك
من بين مقتول وبين هالك
ثم عصبته فاستسقاها ماء فقالت: اذهب فقاتل القوم فإن الماء لا يفوتك. فرجع وكر على القوم فكشفهم ورجع إلى الظعن وقال: إني لمائت، وسأحميكن ميتاً كما حميتكن حياً بأن أقف بفرسي على العقبة وأتكئ على رمحي، فإن فاضت نفسي كان الرمح عمادي فالنجاء، النجاء، فإني أرد بذلك وجوه القوم ساعة من النهار. فقطعن العقبة ووقف هو بإزاء القوم على فرسه متكئاً على رمحه، ونزفة الدم ففاظ والقوم بإزائه يحجمون عن الإقدام عليه، فلما طال وقوفه في مكانه، ورأوه لا يزول عنه، رموا فرسه فقمص وخر ربيعة لوجهه، فطلبوا الظعن فلم يلحقوهن. ثم أن حفص بن الأحنف الكناني مر بجيفة ربيعة فعرفها فأمال عليها أحجاراً من الحرة وقال يبكيه:
لا يبعدن ربيعة بـن مـكـدم
وسقى الغوادي قبرها بذنـوب
نفرت قلوصي من حجارة حرة
بنيت على طلق اليدين وهوب
لا تنفري يا ناق منـه فـإنـه
شراب خمر مسعر لحـروب
لولا السفار وبعده من مهمـه
لتركتها تحبو على العرقـوب
قال أبو عبيدة: قال أبو عمرو بن العلاء: ما نعلم قتيلاً حمى ظعائن غير ربيعة بن مكدم.

More protective than the protector of the caravan
He is Rabi'ah ibn Mukaddam al-Kinani. And in his story, as Abu Ubaidah related, it is said that Nabisha ibn Habib al-Sulami went out on a raid and encountered a caravan from Kinanah at al-Kadid. He wanted to seize them, but Rabi'ah ibn Mukaddam, along with some horsemen, prevented him. Rabi'ah had a young slave with a forelock, so Nabisha attacked him and stabbed him in the upper arm. Rabi'ah went to his mother and said, "Tighten the bandage, Umm Sayyar, for I have lost a knight like a dinar." His mother said, "We, the sons of Rabi'ah ibn Malik, lose our best men like this, some slain and some killed." Then she bandaged him, and he asked her for water. She said, "Go and fight the enemy, for the water will not escape you." So he returned and charged at the enemy, scattering them, and went back to the women and said, “I am about to die, and I will protect you in death as I protected you in life by standing my horse on the pass and leaning on my spear. If my soul departs, the spear will be my support, so flee, flee! For with that, I will repel the enemy for a moment during the day.” So they crossed the pass, and he stood facing the enemy on his horse, leaning on his spear. Blood flowed, and he died, while the enemy, standing before him, hesitated to advance upon him. When he stood in his place for a long time, and they saw that he would not move, they shot at his horse, and it reared up, and Rabi’ah fell on his face. They then pursued the women and camels but could not catch them. Then Hafs ibn al-Ahnaf al-Kinani passed by the carcass of Rabi'ah and recognized it. He heaped stones from the lava field upon it and said, weeping for him:
May Rabi'ah ibn Mukaddam not be far away, and may the rain clouds water his grave with their sins.
My she-camel shies away from the stones of the lava field, built upon the open hands and the open plain.
Do not shies away, O she-camel, from it, for it is a drink of wine, a firebrand for wars.
Were it not for the journey and its distance from the desert, I would have left her crawling on her hocks.
Abu Ubaidah said: Abu Amr ibn al-Ala said: We do not know of any slain man who protected the women of the caravans other than Rabi'ah ibn Mukaddam.
