The friend is a fragrant flower, not a heroine. الْخِلْمُ رَيْحَانَة، وَلَيْسَتْ بِقَهْرمانَة

الْخِلْمُ رَيْحَانَة، وَلَيْسَتْ بِقَهْرمانَة
The friend is a fragrant flower, not a heroine.
------------------------------------------------------
المثل العربي «الْخِلْمُ رَيْحَانَةٌ، وَلَيْسَتْ بِقَهْرَمَانَةٍ» يصوّر الحِلْمَ واللطف كأنهما ريحانة طيبة الرائحة، لا قهرمانةً تتولى الشؤون بالتسلّط والشدة.
وأقرب مقابل له في الإنجليزية، بحسب المعنى المقصود، هو:
“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
أي: باللطف واللين تكسب الناس، لا بالشدة والغلظة.
ومن التعبيرات الأخرى القريبة:
“Kindness goes a long way.” — اللطف يحقق الكثير.
“Gentleness is a strength, not a weakness.” — الرفق قوة وليس ضعفًا.
“Rule with a gentle hand.” — تولَّ الأمر بيد لينة، لا بالتسلّط.
أقرب مقابل من حيث المعنى العام: “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
ومع ذلك، فليس هذا تطابقًا تامًّا؛ إذ إن صورة الريحانة في المثل العربي توحي بأن الحِلْم أمر لطيف محبوب، وليس وظيفةً تقوم على القهر والسيطرة.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Arabic proverb “Kindness is a fragrant flower, not a powerful force” portrays gentleness and kindness as a sweet-smelling flower, not a powerful force that manages affairs with force and severity.
The closest equivalent in English, according to the intended meaning, is:
“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
That is, you win people over with kindness and gentleness, not with harshness and severity.
Other related expressions include:
- “Kindness goes a long way.” — Kindness achieves a great deal.
- “Gentleness is a strength, not a weakness.” — Gentleness is a strength, not a weakness.
- “Rule with a gentle hand.” — Handle matters with a gentle hand, not with force.
The closest equivalent in terms of general meaning is: “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
However, this is not a perfect match; The image of basil in the Arabic proverb suggests that gentleness is a pleasant and desirable thing, and not a function based on coercion and control.

Recklessness is curbed with gentleness. الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ.

الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ.
Recklessness is curbed with gentleness.
----
المثل العربي «الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ» معناه أن الحماقة وسوء التصرّف يمكن كبحهما بالرفق واللين، لا بالعنف والشدة.
وأقرب مقابل له في الإنجليزية:
“You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
أي: تستطيع أن تحقق باللطف ما لا تحققه بالغلظة؛ فالمعاملة اللينة أنفع من المعاملة القاسية.
ومن التعبيرات الإنجليزية القريبة أيضًا:
“Gentleness overcomes force.” — الرفق يغلب القوة.
“Soft words turn away wrath.” — الكلام اللين يطفئ الغضب.
“Patience and kindness can tame the wildest beast.” — الصبر واللطف قادران على ترويض أشد المخلوقات جموحًا. وهذا تعبير توضيحي، لا مثل إنجليزي ثابت بالضرورة.
أقرب مقابل من حيث الحكمة العامة هو:
“You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
لكن إذا أردنا التركيز تحديدًا على معنى كبح الحماقة بالرفق، فإن “Gentleness overcomes force” أقرب إلى المقصود.
------
The Arabic proverb “Khurq bil-rifq yuljamu” means that foolishness and bad behavior can be curbed with gentleness and kindness, not with violence and harshness.
A close equivalent in English is: “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
That is, you can achieve with kindness what you cannot achieve with harshness; gentle treatment is more effective than harsh treatment.
Other related English expressions include:
- “Gentleness overcomes force.”
- “Soft words turn away wrath.”
- “Patience and kindness can tame the wildest beast.” This is an illustrative expression, not necessarily a fixed English proverb.
The closest equivalent in terms of general wisdom is: “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
However, if we want to focus specifically on the meaning of curbing foolishness with gentleness, then “Gentleness overcomes force” is closer to the intended meaning.

Clumsiness is curbed by gentleness الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ.

الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ.
Clumsiness is curbed by gentleness.
-------------------------------------------------------
الخُرْقُ بِالرِّفْقِ يُلْجَمُ
أي: الأحمق أو الجاهل الذي يتصرف بطيش وخشونة يمكن كفُّه وضبطه باللين والرفق، لا بمواجهته بمثل شدته.
وأقرب مقابل إنجليزي:
“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
«بالعسل تصيد ذبابًا أكثر مما تصيده بالخل.»
وهو قريب جدًا من المعنى؛ أي أن اللين وحسن المعاملة أنفع في التعامل مع الشخص الصعب من الشدة والقسوة.
ومن العبارات الأقصر:
“Gentleness gets results.”
«الرفق يحقق النتائج.»
لكن “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar” هو المقابل الإنجليزي المأثور الأقرب.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Clumsiness is reined in by gentleness."
This means that a foolish or ignorant person who acts rashly and roughly can be restrained and brought under control through softness and gentleness, rather than by meeting their harshness with equal severity.
The closest English equivalent is:
“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
This conveys a very similar meaning: that gentleness and kind treatment are more effective when dealing with a difficult person than harshness and severity.
Shorter expressions include:
“Gentleness gets results.”
However, “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar” remains the closest idiomatic English equivalent.
