المثل «إذا أراد الله هلاكَ النملة أنبت لها جناحين» يُضرب لمن تكون أسباب هلاكه ناشئة من الشيء الذي يظنه منفعة أو قوة له؛ أي إن ما يمنحه القدرة أو الطموح قد يكون هو نفسه سبب سقوطه.
أقرب مثل إنجليزي في المعنى هو:
“Pride comes before a fall.”
أي: الغرور يسبق السقوط.
وهناك تعبير إنجليزي آخر قريب جدًا من صورة المثل:
“The higher you climb, the harder you fall.”
أي: كلما ارتفعتَ أكثر، كان سقوطك أشد.
لكن إذا كان المقصود في المثل العربي أن النعمة أو الميزة قد تصبح سبب الهلاك، فالأدق:
“The very thing that gives you wings may be your downfall.”
أي: قد يكون الشيء الذي يمنحك جناحين هو نفسه سبب هلاكك.
وهذه الأخيرة مقابلة للمعنى العربي وليست مثلًا إنجليزيًا تراثيًا ثابتًا.
