I am its thorny trunk and its fertile branch

I am its thorny trunk and its fertile branch
--------------------------------------------------------------------
“I’m the man for the job.”
“I know the ropes.” —
“I’ve been around the block.” —
“I’m an old hand at this.”
“Ask the expert.” —
“I’m an old hand at this.”

The Arabic proverb, “I am its sturdy trunk and its well-supported sapling,” is said of someone who relies on their experience and wisdom, and considers themselves the authority to whom one turns in times of hardship and difficulty. The trunk is the branch of the tree that is rubbed against, and the sapling is the young palm tree that is supported and propped up until it becomes strong. The closest English equivalent is: “I’m the man for the job.” Meaning: I am the right person for this task, and the experienced one capable of performing it. Other related expressions include: “I know the ropes.” — I know the intricacies of matters and know how to handle them. “I’ve been around the block.” — I have extensive experience and many trials. “I’m an old hand at this.” — I am experienced and skilled in this matter. “Ask the expert.” — Ask the expert. The closest equivalent in terms of relying on experience and wisdom is: “I’m an old hand at this.” However, if the speaker means that he is the authority people turn to for solutions to problems, then “I’m the man for the job” is more appropriate, though it doesn’t quite capture the essence of the Arabic proverb.
