Losing a Deal from Sheikh Maho

Losing a Deal from Sheikh Maho
Maho: A clan of Abd al-Qays, and the name of this sheikh is Abdullah ibn Baydara. It is narrated that the tribe of Iyad used to be shamed and insulted for flatulence. One year, a man from Iyad went to the market of Ukaz with two striped cloaks and called out, "I am from Iyad! Who will buy the shame of flatulence from me with these two cloaks?" Abdullah, this sheikh from Abd al-Qays, stood up and said, "Give them here." He wrapped one around his waist and the other around his shoulders, and the Iyad tribesmen witnessed him saying that he had bought the shame of flatulence from Iyad for Abd al-Qays with two cloaks. They bore witness to this, and he returned to his people. When asked about the cloaks, he said, "I bought for you with them the shame of ejaculation for all time." Abd al-Qays said to Iyad:
"The ones who flatulence before us are Iyad... and we neither flatulence nor even try to." Iyad replied:
"O you who are so bold! We make a claim... we announce it, then we do not hide it. Return to your tents and flatulence there..." [p. 253] And some poets said about this:
"O you who saw Like the deal of Ibn Baydarah... a losing, disastrous deal. The shameful buyer, with his ink-stained papyrus... May the hand of the one who made the deal be paralyzed, how much he lost!
Al-Mundhir ibn al-Jarud al-Abdi was the chief of Basra. One day he said: "Who will buy from me the shame of a fart? Let the price be decided." The tribes of Basra were present. A man from Mahu said: "I will." Al-Mundhir said to him: "A second time, you have no mother! You bought it in the pre-Islamic era, and now you come to buy it again in Islam? Go away! May God raise up your announcer!"
Two men, both deserving of punishment, were brought before Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. One of them was thrown down, and the other farted. Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik laughed, so Abd al-Malik became angry and said: "Do you laugh at a punishment I am carrying out in my presence? Take him by the hand!" Al-Walid said: "Take it easy, O Commander of the Faithful! My laughter was due to the saying of one of the governors on the pulpit of Basra: 'By God, if you wink at Hanifah, Abd al-Qays will fart, and the one thrown down is Hanif, and the one who farts is my slave.'" Abd al-Malik laughed and let them go.

He made the worst bargain of his life.
A bad bargain is better broken than kept.
He got the short end of the stick.
Bought a pig in a poke.
Pennies wise, pounds foolish.
He made the worst bargain of his life.
Bought a pig in a poke.

The Arabic proverb "A worse deal than a sheikh's" is used to describe someone who makes a deal or undertakes an action that results in loss and shame instead of profit, becoming an example of poor judgment and bad judgment.
While there is no English proverb that directly matches this historical story, there are proverbs and expressions that convey the same meaning, such as:
He made the worst bargain of his life.
A bad bargain is better broken than kept.
A bad bargain is better broken than kept.
This is used to describe poor judgment.
He got the short end of the stick.
He got the worst possible outcome.
Bought a pig in a poke.
This means he made a bad deal without foresight, and was deceived and lost.
Penny-wise, pounds-foolish.
Wise with pennies, foolish with pounds.
This is used to describe someone who thinks they have gained something small but ends up incurring a much larger loss. The closest equivalent to the Arabic proverb, in terms of the devastating loss resulting from a bad deal, is:
He made the worst bargain of his life.
However, if the intention is to condemn someone who bought something they shouldn't have bought, or brought harm and shame upon themselves, the closest English expression is:
Bought a pig in a poke.
That is, "He entered into a losing deal without thinking," which conveys the meaning intended by the Arabs when they say:
"A worse deal than a foolish old man."
